Josh Horowitz February 9, 1998 Keith Barish Productions Dear Mr. Barish: One of my earliest memories of experiencing a truly great film comes from a project you once worked on over ten years ago with Paul Monash: John Carpenter's Big Trouble in Little China. This film, starring a fast-talking Kurt Russell as the heroic Jack Burton, had it all: a great character out of his element that everyone could root for, lots of great martial-arts sequences, kitschy neon signs in sinister underground lairs, and a two-thousand-year old Chinese guy in a wheelchair named Dave, who shouts "Indeed!" in quite inimitable fashion. Sadly, Big Trouble was not the box-office success that TAFT Productions and 20th Century Fox had hoped it would be. Most people, myself included, had to discover this movie after-the-fact, either on video or cable years later. But it was here that Big Trouble in Little China earned a very dedicated cult following, joining the ranks of other great John Carpenter films such as The Thing, They Live, and Escape from New York. I was surprised when Debra Hill Productions released a sequel to Carpenter's Escape from New York last summer. Suddenly speculation began to rise as to what other projects or sequels Carpenter might have in store for the movie-going public. If Snake Pliskin could "Escape from LA," what could possibly stop Jack Burton from experiencing "More Trouble in Little China? As a student at UCLA interested in film, I decided a while back to set up an Internet Web Page focusing on Big Trouble in Little China. Through this Web site, I presented the idea to the public about the possible creation of a Big Trouble sequel, asking for any ideas and suggestions people might have on the subject. The response has been huge! Fans have submitted story ideas, suggested possible casting choices, and sent their email addresses to me in large numbers, petitioning for a sequel. Thus far, I have collected over two- hundred email addresses from people all over the world who would love to see Jack Burton in action again. I continue to receive an increasing amount of email petition requests daily, leading me to believe that this kind of dedicated Internet-following represents just the 'tip of the iceberg' in the general movie-going public. Apparently, fans are not the only ones who like the idea of a sequel. I discovered in an interview taken shortly after the release of Escape from LA that John Carpenter himself would be interested in another Big Trouble movie with Kurt Russell. Additionally, plans were once in the works to put the Big Trouble characters in a television series called "More Trouble in Little China" several years back, but this was never realized. As the former Executive Producer of Big Trouble, I ask that you seriously consider the thought of bringing Jack Burton and the Porkchop Express back for a very much anticipated return. There is an avid amount of interest out there, and based upon some of the many ideas exchanged on my Web Site, I believe the film could be commercially successful this time around. I ask that you visit my Web Site at: http://www.geocities.com/Area51/Vault/7191 and just take a look at the activity and excitement "More Trouble in Little China" has been generating. If you would care to, I would be more than happy to come by your office and give you a detailed personal tour of my site, as well as discuss any particulars in more depth. Sincerely, Josh Horowitz
